The whimsical brand beloved by Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa

There’s a good chance you’ve already stumbled upon Marshall Columbia’s clothes on Instagram—you just may not have realised it yet. For the past few months, the emerging, Brooklyn-based designer has been dressing megawatt stars like Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, and he has been gaining a secret cult following for his graphic pieces (an assortment of which is currently available on Ssense).

The fandom only makes sense: his colourful, revealing aesthetic practically begs for a selfie. This weekend, Bella Hadid wore a baby blue top with cutouts from the label’s upcoming September collection. And when an It-model wears your stuff, you know it’s really about to pop off.

The skin-revealing slashes on Hadid’s top are a signature of Columbia’s designs, applied with reckless abandon to his slinky dresses, bike shorts, and sweaters. The 24 year old, who studied at FIT in New York, got his start by assisting the costume designer Diego Montoya. Columbia launched his label during quarantine last year, and a lot of his work is inspired by the arts and crafts he enjoyed making as a child. This is especially evident in the colourful beadwork that he embellishes his pieces with.

Hadid isn’t the only fan of his bodycon looks, either: Doja Cat also wore a similar top in hot pink, during a performance in Miami in July. She also wore Columbia’s mini skirt, also complete with cutouts, and his puffy blue mini bag, which is like a pillow for your wallet and phone. Dua Lipa recently wore his blue, heart-print dress while on vacation in Albania (it’s also from an upcoming collection). She’s also worn the brand’s checkered knits and his neon green bag. The puffy purses are a clear favourite. Earlier this year, Miley Cyrus also performed during an Apple Music event wearing Columbia’s exuberantly beaded suit, which is anything but stiff or corporate.

Columbia’s whimsical finishings are definitely not for the wallflower. Only makes sense, then, that some of the most-photographed stars in the world are fans. And with his upcoming drop, releasing in September, you, too, can dress like a chic star. Start calling up the paparazzi.
